The short version
- You sign in with your phone number and an OTP. We don’t ask for your email, photos or contacts.
- Your voice is never stored. AI tutor speech-to-text runs on your device. During live calls, your own audio is processed in short chunks for tips and safety, then deleted immediately.
- Live calls are voice-only and are not recorded.
- We use AI to keep the community safe. Abusive, sexual, hateful or threatening language leads to an automatic ban.
- We never see your card or UPI details. We don’t sell your personal data.
- You can delete your account instantly in the app: Profile → Settings → Delete account.
Who we are
BoloEnglish (the “app”, including the website and web app at boloenglish.krivyom.com and app.boloenglish.krivyom.com) is operated by Krivyom, India (“Krivyom”, “we”, “us”). Under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (“DPDP Act”), we are the Data Fiduciary for the personal data described here.
Contact: support@krivyom.com. Our Grievance Officer’s details are in Grievance Officer below.
Information we collect
1. Account information
- Phone number — used to sign you in with a one-time password (OTP) through Firebase Authentication (a Google service).
2. Profile you enter
- First name and avatar emoji.
- Gender — used only for the safety matching preference (whether you are matched with the opposite gender on live calls).
- Native language, state, goals, interests and daily goal — used to personalise your practice.
- Birth year — used to check that you are old enough (13+ for the app, 18+ for live calls).
3. Learning data
- Your levels, XP and streaks.
- AI tutor conversation text.
- Your mistakes and corrections notebook.
- Call history: who you talked to (your partner), call duration and ratings.
- Call feedback reports.
4. Safety information
- Reports you make or receive, and users you block.
- Moderation flags created by our AI safety system (for example, that abusive language was detected). These are records, not audio.
5. Purchase records
- Your plan, amount paid, dates, and transaction or order IDs from Google Play, the Apple App Store or Razorpay.
- We never see or store your card, UPI or bank details — those are handled by the store or Razorpay.
6. Device and usage information
- A device push token (Firebase Cloud Messaging) so we can send you notifications such as reminders.
- App analytics and crash reports through Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics (for example, which screens are used, app version, device model and crash details).
- Server logs (such as request times and error details) to keep the service running and secure.
7. Advertising information (free users)
- If you use the free version, we show ads through Google AdMob, which may also serve ads from Meta Audience Network through mediation. These services may use your device’s advertising ID and related information to show and measure ads.
- Where required (for example, for users in the European Economic Area or the UK), we ask for your consent using Google’s User Messaging Platform (UMP).
We do not collect your contacts, photos, precise location, email address or any other data not listed above.
Voice, AI and live calls
AI tutor
When you speak to the AI tutor, speech-to-text runs on your device. Only the resulting text is sent to our servers to generate the tutor’s reply and corrections. Your recording does not leave your phone.
Live practice calls
- Calls are voice-only and are delivered through Agora, a real-time audio service. Calls are not recorded.
- During a call, your own microphone audio (not your partner’s) is sent in short chunks to our server and to Google Gemini (an AI service) to:
- show you instant English tips and create your feedback report; and
- run safety moderation — detecting abusive, sexual, hateful or threatening speech, and talk in languages other than English.
- This audio is processed and deleted immediately — it is never stored.
- The text transcript is kept only until your feedback report is made, and is then deleted.
- Your feedback report is kept until you delete it or delete your account.
- Moderation flags (not audio) are kept as safety records — see How long we keep data.
How we use your information
- To provide the app — sign you in, run the AI tutor, match you for calls, show tips and feedback, and track your progress.
- To keep people safe — check age eligibility, apply your matching preference, moderate content, handle reports and blocks, and ban users who break our Community Guidelines.
- To process payments — verify purchases and manage your Premium plan.
- To communicate — send notifications (such as practice reminders) and reply to your support requests.
- To show ads to free users.
- To improve and secure the app — understand usage, fix crashes and prevent fraud and abuse.
- To meet legal obligations — for example, tax records and lawful requests from authorities.
Consent and legal basis
We process your personal data on the basis of the consent you give when you sign up and use the app, and for “legitimate uses” allowed by the DPDP Act (such as complying with law). You can withdraw consent at any time by deleting your account or contacting us. Withdrawing consent does not affect processing already done, and some features will stop working without the data they need.
You can turn off notifications in your device settings, and reset or limit use of your advertising ID in your device settings.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal data. We share it only with service providers who help us run the app, under their own terms and security commitments, and only as needed:

Legal reasons — we may disclose information to law enforcement or government authorities when required by law, or to protect the safety of our users and the public (for example, reports of child sexual exploitation — see our Child Safety Standards).

Our servers run on Amazon Web Services (AWS) in India (Mumbai region), and our database is MongoDB Atlas, hosted on AWS. Sign-in, analytics, crash reports and notifications are handled by Firebase (Google). Some of our service providers, such as Google, may process data on their infrastructure outside India in line with their own safeguards and applicable law.
